Although safety is a year-round focus at Heatleys, October is National Safe Work Month, a reminder of the importance of protecting our employees’ health and wellbeing. This year’s theme, safety: every job, every day, calls on all workplaces - no matter the occupation, industry, location, or size - to put safety at the heart of daily work practices. National Safe Work Month is the perfect opportunity to act and discuss how you can make safety part of every job, every day.
Identify hazards
Hazards can be physical or psychological, so check and update your risk register often. Walk the workplace, talk with your team, review incident records, and stay alert to industry trends. Remember - stress or burnout can signal hidden mental health risks.
Assess risks
Consider what could happen if someone is exposed to a hazard and how likely it is. This can be a simple team discussion or, for complex issues, use risk tools or seek expert advice.
Control risks
Take practical steps to eliminate risks, or if that’s not possible, minimise them based on their likelihood and severity. Employers are responsible for managing WHS risks and must do this in consultation with workers.
Review controls
Check that controls are working as intended - don’t wait for an incident. Consult workers, track safety outcomes, and address new hazards. Encourage open feedback to build a strong safety culture.
At Heatleys we endeavour to foster a culture that prioritises safety, where workers feel confident to report risks and highlight issues - helping ensure a safer workplace for everyone.
